In our present society it can be observed, that the older generation, after their retirement from the official job, wants to keep up their intellectual activity, and participate in the challenges in the field of learning. At the same time – lacking suitable programs – they have relatively less opportunity to enrich their knowledge.

Széchenyi István Egyetem, recognising this problem, has launched in 2010 the foremost Seniors University in Hungary/Győr through a TÁMOP project. The project was mainly aimed at disseminating the present scientific results to pensioners, and providing an opportunity for the senior citizens beyond 60, living in the region to experience or relive the university life

The results and success were astonishing. The lecture hall was absolutely packed full and the audience was active and diligent. Our University and the co-organizer partners, the West-Hungarian University, the local newspaper Kisalföld, and the Regional Pension Association decided to continue the program series. The sixth semester has already begun in 2013. The participants' number grows year-by-year (there is currently 1200 registered students), and there are also many voluntary lecturers from the both universities.

The success story of the Seniors University in Győr is a distinguished example of how the university is duty bound to its mission as an “universitas”, to serve the thirst for knowledge of the interested society, independent of age, how to treat the community of the silver age as a partner, how to keep up their up-to-date knowledge, and how to ensure true lifelong learning.
